Bonjour,Geert!
Thanx for your note - I was fortunate enough to meet Chaland and his wife Isabelle in Angouleme in 1985. He signed a copy of Le Jeune Albert for me, a book I treasure to this day.
I'm afraid that my tribute article was written before I had a word-processor, so I don't have a digital version of it. I could send a scan of the pages from the Comics Journal, which you could post for your members, okay?
And perhaps you can help me - for years I've been trying to find copies of Coeurs d'Acier Tome 1, and Coeurs d'Acier Tome 2, published in 1990 by Chamapaka. Please let me know if these are available - merci!
Salut! -KEN

alors voili voilou la réponse de Ken
et la copie de l'article

Hi, Geert!
Sorry I haven't gotten back to you sooner, but I was a guest at a convention in Seattle for the past few days and just now returned. I really appreciate the images you sent - I'm afraid I couldn't afford a copy of Coeurs d'acier even if I found one, but I would like to see scans of your pirate copy, or the Spirou version.
Attached below is a copy of the article that I wrote for the Comics Journal, published in 1991. The magazine did the layout and chose the illustrations, and I wish they had used more of Chaland's work, which is still quite unfamiliar to the english-speaking audience in Canada and the USA. He is very well known in Quebec, of course!
Please let me know if there's anything else you need, and thanx in advance for any more images you could send me - salut!

I did not speak the language of shake spare !!!!
Re: "Yves Chaland : Visionary of Europe's Atomic Age"
J'ai retenu cette phrase (grosso modo) : he worked very hard to make what he did look effortless.

Re: "Yves Chaland : Visionary of Europe's Atomic Age"
Re: "Yves Chaland : Visionary of Europe's Atomic Age"

Re: "Yves Chaland : Visionary of Europe's Atomic Age"
Re: "Yves Chaland : Visionary of Europe's Atomic Age"
Re: "Yves Chaland : Visionary of Europe's Atomic Age"

Re: "Yves Chaland : Visionary of Europe's Atomic Age"

You won’t find this glorious tome at your local Comics ’N’ Games. But if you’re a fan of bandes dessinées, you want — no, need — a copy of this book, a collection of illustrations and non-comics work by Yves Chaland, who died in 1990 in his early 30s.
In Europe, Chaland was lionized as a successor to Franquin and Herge. In the U.S., he’s virtually unknown except to the cognoscenti who collected volumes of his clean-line work. This 1995 book features page after page of beautiful full-color (and duotone) magazine covers, ads, postcards and other pieces, the kind of stuff that shows just how blinkered and out-of-touch we American comics fans are. Chaland, a virtuoso comic artist, entered the mainstream in a way we reserve for film directors and pop stars.
Almost best of all, the text (including a chronology of his life) is presented in French and English, so we monolings can learn all about what we missed. It’s a pricey number, but its lavishness and sheer size (it’s a bit bigger than the similarly proportioned Completely MAD) make it the book of the year for B.D. buffs.
